Smishing Scams – What they are and how to identify them

What is Smishing?
Smishing is a type of phishing attack where scammers send fraudulent text messages to trick victims into clicking malicious links or sharing sensitive information. With AI making these attacks easier to execute and the holiday season increasing the likelihood of travel and package deliveries, smishing attempts are on the rise.

How to Identify Smishing

Unexpected Messages
Be wary of texts from unknown numbers or companies you don’t usually interact with.

Urgency & Fear Tactics
Messages claiming your account will be locked, a package is delayed, or you must act “immediately” are red flags.

Suspicious Links
Hover over links (if possible) or verify them before clicking. Legitimate companies won’t send shortened or odd-looking URLs via text.

Requests for Personal Information
Banks, delivery services, or government agencies will never ask for sensitive data like passwords or SSNs via text.

Spelling & Grammar Mistakes
Many smishing attempts contain awkward phrasing, typos, or improper capitalization.

Unknown or Spoofed Senders
Scammers can spoof real phone numbers to look legitimate, but official organizations rarely communicate urgent matters via SMS.

Too Good to Be True Offers
If you receive a text about winning a prize, refund, or lottery you never entered, it’s likely a scam.

Verify Directly
If unsure, contact the company through their official website or phone number instead of replying to the text.

Trust Your Instincts
If something feels off, it probably is! Stay cautious and think before you click.
